How to Change a YouTube Thumbnail in 2026 (Videos & Shorts)

Published 7 September 2026•12 min read

Learning how to change a YouTube thumbnail takes about forty seconds. Knowing when to change one — and what to replace it with — is worth far more, because the thumbnail is the only part of your video that every potential viewer sees before deciding whether you exist. A swap costs you nothing, carries no ranking penalty, and on an older video it is frequently the single fastest way to recover impressions that are already being served.

This guide covers the exact steps on desktop and mobile, how Shorts covers work differently, the size and file rules YouTube enforces, why the upload option sometimes disappears, and how to decide which videos deserve a new image first.

How to change a YouTube thumbnail on desktop

Desktop YouTube Studio is the only place with full control, including custom uploads for both regular videos and Shorts.

  1. Go to YouTube Studio. Open studio.youtube.com and sign in with the account that owns the channel.
  2. Open the Content tab. It lists every upload; click the video title, not the thumbnail preview, to open the Details screen.
  3. Click the pencil icon on the thumbnail. It appears when you hover the current image, in the Thumbnail block below the description field.
  4. Choose Upload file. Select your 1280x720 image. YouTube shows a crop preview so you can confirm nothing important sits near the edges.
  5. Click Save, top right. The change is applied immediately — there is no re-processing and no review queue for the image itself.

If you would rather use a frame from the video, the same panel offers three auto-generated stills. They are convenient but almost always underperform a designed image, because they contain no text, no face isolation and no deliberate contrast.

How to change a thumbnail in the mobile app

The mobile route is shorter and more limited. Open the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, open Your videos, tap the video, then tap the pencil or Edit icon. Tap the current thumbnail and you will be offered the auto-generated frames plus, on a verified channel, a Custom thumbnail option that pulls from your camera roll. Tap Save.

The catch: mobile crops aggressively and gives you no safe-area preview, so an image that looks correct in your gallery can lose its text on the right edge once it is placed in a feed card. If the thumbnail matters, upload it from a desktop.

How to change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail

Shorts behave differently from long-form video, and this is where most of the confusion lives.

  • In the mobile app you generally select a frame from the Short itself. There is a frame slider on the edit screen, and the frame you land on becomes the cover.
  • In desktop Studio you can upload a genuine custom cover for a Short, exactly like a normal video.
  • The aspect ratio is 9:16, not 16:9. A standard 1280x720 image will be centre-cropped into a vertical frame, cutting off both sides. Export Shorts covers at 1080x1920.
  • The Shorts feed itself does not show your cover. The cover appears on your channel grid, in search and in suggested placements — which is exactly where browsing viewers decide whether to open it.

Full specifications, safe areas and export settings are in our Shorts thumbnail size guide, and you can pull any existing Short cover with the Shorts thumbnail downloader.

Thumbnail requirements YouTube enforces

RequirementValueWhat happens if you ignore it
Resolution1280 x 720 pxBelow 640 px wide is rejected; between the two it looks soft on TV
Aspect ratio16:9 (9:16 for Shorts)Anything else is letterboxed or cropped
File sizeUnder 2 MBUpload silently fails or errors at Save
FormatJPG, PNG, GIF, WEBPHEIC from iPhone is refused — convert first
Account statusVerified channelThe Upload file option does not appear at all
Content policyNo shock, nudity, misleading imageryRemoval, age restriction or a channel strike

You can verify an image against every one of those rules before uploading with the thumbnail checker, which flags dimensions, ratio and file weight in one pass.

Why the custom thumbnail option is missing

If there is no Upload file button, one of four things is true, in order of likelihood.

  1. The channel is not verified. Custom thumbnails are gated behind phone verification. Verify, then hard-reload Studio — the option does not appear until the page is refreshed.
  2. You are on mobile. Some account states expose custom uploads only on desktop. Try studio.youtube.com in a desktop browser before assuming a restriction.
  3. There is an active strike. A Community Guidelines strike suspends custom thumbnails for its duration.
  4. The video is set as made for kids. Certain features are limited on those uploads.

Does changing a thumbnail reset or hurt the video?

No. This is the most persistent myth in the topic, and it stops creators from making the cheapest improvement available to them. Changing a thumbnail does not remove a video from search, reset its ranking, wipe its watch history or restart the algorithmic testing window. YouTube simply serves the new file on subsequent impressions.

What does change is click-through rate, and that is the point. If a video already receives impressions but converts poorly, the impressions are free — you are just failing to convert them. A video sitting at a 2% click-through rate with 40,000 monthly impressions is losing hundreds of views a month to an image that could be redesigned in twenty minutes. The mechanics of that trade-off are covered in depth in our thumbnail CTR guide.

Which videos to re-thumbnail first

Do not swap everything at once. You lose the ability to attribute any change, and you overwrite images that were working. Prioritise like this:

  • High impressions, low CTR. The clearest opportunity: demand exists, the image is the bottleneck. Anything under 3% with meaningful impressions is a candidate.
  • Videos ranking on page one for a search term. Search traffic is durable, so a lift here compounds for years.
  • Evergreen tutorials over 12 months old. Design conventions age; a 2024 thumbnail looks dated beside 2026 competitors in the same results page.
  • Anything with a text-heavy image. Over 60% of watch time is mobile, where a thumbnail is roughly the size of a postage stamp. Three to four words is the practical ceiling.

Change one thumbnail at a time and give it seven to fourteen days before judging. YouTube Studio shows impressions click-through rate per video, and the comparison only means something if nothing else changed in the same window. To study what already works in your niche, pull competitor images in full resolution with the YouTube thumbnail downloader and line them up side by side at mobile size.

What to design instead of what you have

Once you know how to change a thumbnail, the useful question is what to replace it with. The rules that survive testing are unglamorous and consistent:

  • One subject, one idea. Competing focal points read as noise at small sizes.
  • Hard contrast between subject and background. Cutting the subject out and placing them on a flat or blurred background outperforms a busy screenshot almost every time.
  • Text that does not repeat the title. The title is already next to the image. Use the thumbnail to add the second half of the idea, not the same half twice.
  • Faces with a legible expression. Not necessarily shock — clarity. The viewer should read the emotion in a quarter of a second.
  • Test at 210 pixels wide. That is roughly the real display size in a mobile feed. If it fails there, it fails.

The complete design workflow, including fonts, safe zones and layout templates, is in how to make a YouTube thumbnail, and the export specification lives in the thumbnail size guide.

The new thumbnail is not showing up

You saved it, Studio shows the new image, and the watch page still displays the old one. This is caching, not failure. YouTube serves thumbnails from a global CDN and social platforms cache their own copies, so propagation can take a few hours across search results, subscription feeds and shared links.

Check the live file in a private window rather than your logged-in browser. If it is still wrong the next day, work through our guide to thumbnails not showing, which covers stale CDN copies, rejected files and the maxresdefault 404 case.

A 20-minute refresh routine

  1. Open Studio Analytics and sort your last 30 videos by impressions.
  2. Note every video above your channel median in impressions and below 3% click-through rate.
  3. Take the top three. For each, download the current thumbnail and three competitor thumbnails ranking for the same query.
  4. Redesign at 1280x720, keeping text to four words and one clear subject.
  5. Check the file with the thumbnail checker, upload in Studio, save.
  6. Diary a review for 14 days later and compare click-through rate against the prior 14 days.

Run that monthly and it becomes the highest-return twenty minutes on your channel: no filming, no editing, no upload — just better conversion of impressions you are already earning.

Changing YouTube Thumbnails: FAQs

How do I change a YouTube thumbnail after uploading?
Open YouTube Studio, go to Content, click the video, then click the pencil icon on the current thumbnail and choose Upload file. Pick a 1280x720 JPG or PNG under 2 MB and click Save. The change is live immediately, though feeds and search results can keep showing the old image for a few hours because of CDN caching.
Why can I not upload a custom thumbnail?
Custom thumbnails require a verified channel. If the Upload file option is missing, verify your account with a phone number, wait a few minutes and reload Studio. The other common blockers are a file over 2 MB, an unsupported format, or a channel with an active Community Guidelines strike.
How do I change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
On desktop in YouTube Studio you can now upload a custom cover for a Short exactly like a normal video. In the mobile app you can only pick a frame from the video itself, using the Edit screen and the frame selector. Shorts covers display as 9:16 vertical, so a 16:9 image will be cropped.
Does changing a thumbnail hurt your views or ranking?
No. Swapping a thumbnail does not reset a video, remove it from search or reduce its ranking. YouTube simply starts serving the new image to new impressions. A better thumbnail usually lifts click-through rate, which is a positive signal, so refreshing weak thumbnails on old videos is one of the safest growth tactics available.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?
1280x720 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio, JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP, under 2 MB. The minimum accepted width is 640 pixels, but anything below 1280 looks soft on desktop and TV, so always export at the full size.
How long does it take for a new thumbnail to appear everywhere?
In Studio it is instant. On the watch page it is usually a few minutes. In search results, subscription feeds and on social shares it can take several hours because those images are cached. Clearing your browser cache or checking in a private window shows the current version.
