Why thumbnails fail before the video starts
Most creators design thumbnails at full size in Photoshop or Canva, zoomed to 100% on a large monitor, and then wonder why the click-through rate stays flat. Viewers never see the image that way. They see it as a small card in a crowded feed, on a phone, next to five or six other videos competing for the same second of attention. A thumbnail is not judged on its own — it is judged against its neighbours. That is the exact situation this checker reproduces.
Test your own image, not just someone else's video
The checker works two ways. Switch to Upload image and drag in the JPG, PNG or WebP you just exported — the file is read locally in your browser and never sent to a server, so unreleased thumbnails stay private. Or stay on YouTube link and paste any watch URL, youtu.be short link, Shorts link or bare 11-character ID to pull the official image from YouTube's CDN. Either way the preview updates instantly and you can swap images as many times as you want.
Four surfaces, one image
- Desktop: a three-column homepage grid. Your thumbnail sits among other videos, so you can see whether its colour and subject pull the eye or blend in.
- Tablet: a two-column grid at a mid size — the surface most creators never test, and where oversized text starts to look cluttered.
- Mobile: a single-column phone feed. Most YouTube watch time is mobile, so if the main subject or the text is not instantly readable here, nothing else matters.
- YouTube search: a results list where the thumbnail is a wide rectangle beside a long title. Here the thumbnail and the title have to say two different things rather than repeat each other.
Judge the whole click package
Under the preview you can edit the video title, the channel name and the views-and-date line. This matters more than it sounds: viewers process the thumbnail and the title as one unit in about a quarter of a second. A great image with a title that repeats the same words wastes half the message. Type your real title, then look at the mobile card and ask whether the pair together makes the video worth tapping.
Fixes to apply after checking
If text is unreadable in the mobile preview, cut it to three words or fewer and increase the font size. If your subject is hard to find in the desktop grid, crop tighter — faces and single objects survive scaling, busy scenes do not. If your image disappears against YouTube's dark interface, move to a brighter, more saturated colour family than the videos around it. Then re-export, drop the new file in, and compare again in seconds.
