How to Delete a YouTube Video in 2026 (and What You Lose)
Deleting a YouTube video takes three clicks, and that is exactly the problem. There is no trash folder, no 30-day grace period and no support ticket that reverses it. The watch hours, the comment thread, the backlinks and the analytics history all vanish with the file, and for a channel still chasing monetisation thresholds that can be an expensive mistake made in four seconds.
This guide covers the exact deletion steps on desktop and mobile, how to remove several videos at once, what actually happens to your channel afterwards, and the four situations where making a video private or unlisted is the far smarter move.
How to delete a YouTube video on desktop
- Save a copy first. In Studio, open the video, use the three-dot menu and choose Download. You get the processed MP4 rather than your master file, but it is better than nothing.
- Open studio.youtube.com signed in as the channel owner, not as a limited-permission manager.
- Click Content in the left sidebar. Use the Videos, Shorts, Live and Posts tabs to find the right item.
- Hover the video row and click the three vertical dots at the far right of the row.
- Choose Delete forever, tick the confirmation checkbox and confirm. The removal is instant.
The video stops playing for everyone the moment you confirm. Anyone with the link now sees an unavailable page — the same screen covered in our video not available guide, which is useful if you are trying to work out whether a video you cannot reach was deleted, made private, or simply blocked in your country.
How to delete a video from the YouTube mobile app
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture, then Your channel.
- Find the video, tap the three-dot menu next to it and choose Delete.
- Confirm. In the YouTube Studio app the path is Content, tap the video, then the three-dot menu, then Delete.
Two limits worth knowing on mobile: there is no bulk selection, and Shorts filmed in the app are deleted from the same menu but occasionally keep showing on your channel grid for a few minutes because of client-side caching. Reload the app rather than deleting twice.
How to delete several videos at once
Bulk deletion is desktop-only. In Studio, open Content, then tick the checkbox that appears when you hover the thumbnail of each video. A bulk actions bar appears at the top with Delete forever in the More actions menu. Before you select anything, use the filter bar to narrow the list — Visibility, Date, Views and Made for kids are all filterable, so a task like "delete every unlisted upload from 2023 with fewer than 50 views" takes one filter and one selection pass rather than an afternoon.
Channel cleanups usually go wrong in the same way: creators bulk delete old low-view videos on the theory that weak content drags the channel down. It does not work that way. YouTube evaluates videos individually, so a video with 40 views neither helps nor harms the reach of a new upload. What deletion does remove is real watch time from your 12-month rolling total.
What deleting actually costs you
| What happens to | Delete forever | Set to private |
|---|---|---|
| The video file | Erased from YouTube | Kept, hidden from everyone |
| Watch hours toward monetisation | Removed from your total | Removed while private, restored if republished |
| Comments and likes | Gone permanently | Preserved |
| The URL and any backlinks | Dead forever | Reusable later |
| Reversibility | None | One click |
The monetisation line is the one that catches people out. The Partner Programme counts 4,000 public watch hours over the trailing 12 months, and deleted videos take their share with them. If you are at 3,600 hours and delete a two-year-old tutorial that still quietly earns 20 hours a month, you have just pushed your own deadline back. The full threshold list is in our monetisation requirements guide, and the YouTube money calculator shows what those hours are worth before you throw them away.
When private or unlisted beats deleting
- The video is simply old or off-brand. Private it. Nobody finds it, nothing is lost, and you can bring it back if the niche shifts.
- You uploaded the wrong cut. Do not delete and re-upload — you would restart the URL, the comments and the ranking from zero. Use YouTube's Trim feature in the editor, or replace the packaging instead. Our thumbnail change guide covers swapping the cover without touching the file.
- The video underperformed. Underperformance is usually packaging, not content. Rewrite the title with the patterns in our title formulas guide and test a new cover against real competitors before writing the upload off.
- You need it hidden only from search. Unlisted keeps the link working for embeds, course pages and email links while removing it from search, suggested and your channel page entirely.
Delete forever earns its place in a narrower set of cases: a copyright or privacy complaint you accept, a video containing personal data, content that breaches a client contract, or a strike risk you want gone before a review.
Can a deleted YouTube video be recovered?
Not by you, and not by YouTube support. There is no restore, no recycle bin and no hidden archive. Two partial routes exist and both are limited. Third-party archives such as the Wayback Machine occasionally hold a page snapshot, but almost never the video stream itself. Google Takeout only helps if you exported your channel data before the deletion, because the export is generated from content that still exists.
The practical answer is a habit rather than a fix: keep master files in cloud storage, and before any cleanup, save the thumbnails too. A quick pass through the YouTube thumbnail downloader gives you full-resolution covers for every video you are about to remove, which is often the only asset worth keeping from an old upload. If you need the underlying identifiers for your own records, the video ID finder pulls the eleven-character ID out of any URL before it goes dead.
Deleted, but still showing in Google
A deleted video stops playing instantly, yet the Google result, the cached thumbnail and any embed on another site can persist for days. This is normal indexing lag, not a failed deletion. Three things speed it up:
- Remove Outdated Content in Google Search Console, which flags the dead URL for a priority recrawl.
- Ask embedders to pull the player from their pages, since a broken embed keeps the URL alive in crawl paths.
- Wait. Most results clear inside two weeks without any intervention.
If the video is still playing for other people after you deleted it, you almost certainly deleted a different upload — duplicate re-uploads are common on channels that publish the same cut to both a main and a backup channel. Check the video ID rather than the title.
A safer cleanup routine
- Export your data first. Google Takeout, YouTube, full channel export. Do it before touching anything.
- Filter, do not scroll. Use Studio's filters to build the exact list of candidates.
- Set everything to private for 30 days instead of deleting. Watch analytics for anything you did not expect to matter.
- Delete only what is still irrelevant after that month, and only when there is a real reason beyond tidiness.
- Redirect the attention, not the archive. Point playlists, end screens and pinned comments at the videos you want ranked — that moves more views than any deletion ever will. Our channel audit guide walks through the whole review in order.
The one-minute summary
Studio, Content, three-dot menu, Delete forever — that is the mechanic, and it is irreversible. Before you use it, ask whether private would achieve the same thing, because private keeps the file, the comments, the URL and the option to change your mind. Delete when the content genuinely must be gone; hide it when you simply no longer want it seen. And back up the file and the thumbnail first, because the moment that checkbox is confirmed, the only copy left is the one you made.
Deleting YouTube Videos: FAQs
- How do I delete a video on YouTube?
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Content, hover the video row and click the three-dot menu, then choose Delete forever and confirm the checkbox. On the mobile app, open the video from your channel, tap the three-dot menu and select Delete. The removal is immediate and cannot be undone.
- Can I recover a deleted YouTube video?
- No. Once you confirm Delete forever, YouTube removes the file from its servers and there is no restore button, no trash folder and no support request that brings it back. The only recovery route is your own local copy or a cloud backup you made before deleting.
- Should I delete a video or make it private?
- Private is almost always the better choice. Making a video private removes it from search, suggested and your channel page while keeping the file, the analytics history and the URL intact, so you can restore it later. Delete only when the content must legally or permanently disappear.
- Does deleting a YouTube video hurt my channel?
- Deleting removes that video's watch time and views from your channel totals, which can matter if you are still working toward the 4,000 public watch-hours monetisation threshold. It does not trigger a penalty, but the lost history never returns, and comments, likes and any backlinks to that URL are lost too.
- How do I delete multiple YouTube videos at once?
- In Studio's Content tab, tick the checkbox beside each video, then use the bulk actions bar at the top and choose Delete forever. You can filter by visibility, date or views first to build the selection quickly. There is no way to bulk delete from the mobile app.
- How long does it take for a deleted video to disappear from Google?
- The video stops playing immediately, but Google's search results and cached thumbnails can linger for a few days to a few weeks. You can speed this up with the Remove Outdated Content tool in Google Search Console once the URL returns an unavailable page.
